Because cord blood banking is something that is fairly new to people, even though it has been around for a while, there are several questions that go unanswered. One of those questions is how can a mother prepare for cord blood banking. Cord blood banking is a simple procedure that does not need any preparation from the mother. The cord blood is not collected until after the baby is born. Once the baby is born the doctor or nursing staff will collect the cord blood by using a syringe.
Today there are several different decisions that a mother needs to make when it comes to her health, her baby’s health, the delivery and more. You choose the hospital or doctor that will help you deliver your baby. There is no limit to a mother’s choices. So why shouldn’t a mother have a choice on cord blood banking as well. When it comes to cord blood banking a mother has the choice to donate the cord blood or to collect it for the future. They also have the choice to store the cord blood in a public cord blood bank or a private cord blood bank. Each bank has their own rules and regulations but all are required to follow FDA regulations when it comes to maintaining your cord blood.
When considering a public cord blood bank you may pay less monthly for banking than in a private bank. It averages about $100.00 per month either way but it could be more or it could be less, depending on each individual bank. Before having your baby it is a wise decision to ask your doctor first to see which bank they are associated with. Most hospitals will offer cord blood banking but there are still other hospitals that do not. In the near future it will probably be everywhere if everyone expresses an interest.
Cord blood banking is a major decision and there is nothing that a mother-to-be needs to do in order to prepare for it. She doesn’t need to eat differently or schedule an extra procedure. It is something that has no affect on how you prepare for it. Even women who have a cesarean section have the choice of cord banking because the cord blood comes from the umbilical cord.
There is one thing that a mother-to-be needs to do to prepare for cord blood banking and that is to notify her doctor, hospital or midwife to make them aware of her decision. The hospital staff or mid wife will take care of the procedure while you hold your new baby safely in your arms.
